A downloadable game

Context

This was a University project, focusing on programming and creating a game with Procedural/Random Generation. I have chosen to create a 2D top-down shooter, and used the theme of Wild West from my other project that was running alongside this one. Now, we were not tasked with creation of a fully playable game, but rather being able to showcase a functional level generator for the game of our choice.

I have still decided to give it a go in making something fully playable and challenged myself with this project. I wanted a Binding of Isaac style roguelike with a dungeon like layouts, but on a much larger scale with rooms that felt like open terrain on a desert.

The Mistakes

I have spent a lot of time on assets and making it look pretty rather than focusing on creating a fully functional generator. This is why objects are spawning in walls... And I wasn't that good at programming at the time, so I couldn't figure out how to fix it at the time.

With that, because I have spent too much time on visuals I haven't had the chance  building the dungeon like system, and ended up with having to creating a traveller that you can go up to instead, and with enough gold buy a passage to the next stage.

My Thoughts

In terms of the UI for this project, it's nothing special, and its one of few on which I have put little to no time on creating a good looking menu, which is rare in my case.

It still turned out ok and not the worst of my creations. I have also made a 'how to play' page which goes over gameplay and objective of the game.

What I've Learned

  • I need to prioritise what is important rather than what I like
  • Improved at C# programming (Procedural and Random Generation)
